BARROW’S Christmas lights switch-on has been called off.
The annual event, which attracts hundreds of Barrow residents will not go ahead after the local council published funding fears.
It has been hoped that the BIC will be able to bridge the gap in funding and save the event. However, a recent meeting decided not to fund the light show – putting the whole event in jeopardy.
Phil Huck, Executive Director at Barrow Borough Council, said: “This is down to the fact that we have got to save £2.37 million off our budget by 2020 – and that comes after us having saved £5m between 2010 and 2016.
“We still have money in the budget to pay for lights across the borough along with the installation and testing of them, but there will be no support event this year.
“It is clearly something that we would like to do, but in difficult times, we have to make difficult decisions.”
