Something unusual?

Shopping has stepped up a gear - car parks are heaving and stores are bustling with the sound of shoppers-on-a-mission, stocking up on food and gifts, ready for the hibernation days of Christmas.

It's all-out war on the high street, as the lights are strung from the town hall and glittery things are window-dressed to impress and pull us feeble shoppers in.

I don't mean to sound grumpy, I'm not one to reply "bah, humbug" at the mere mention of the big day, but goodness me - friends that were hard-up last month have suddenly dug deep into their pockets not to be outdone in the must-have shopping frenzy. It's buy, buy, buy before it's too late and all the glamorous gifts, beautiful bargains, and two-for-one tins of choccies are replaced by empty shelves.

I've been out and about looking for different gift ideas, and checking out the latest fashion looks for Christmas.

Gorgeous gifts for little ones...

I came across these lovely gifts while browsing in Bowness - Hot Hugs and Fuzzy feet are part of the winter collection on sale at The House Shop' alongside the new Tesco store in Bowness.

The Fuzzy Feet are really fun for keeping feet warm this winter. They come in one stretchy size to fit most feet, so it's an easy and very silly present to buy. Fuzzy Feet: £9.99 For those of you not able to nip into the gift store, some items can be purchased online at www.houseshopuk.com.

It's a wrap! Stylish coats

The latest design in faux fur is a cropped coat or 3/4 sleeve jacket. This Per Una design is by far my favourite. The shape helps to make limbs appear longer and hides a wider waistline really well. The Winter Faux Fur, by Per Una, at M&S.

This flower-print coat could be the perfect present for the young, trendy female in your life. The flower-print design works well in the vintage grey colours, and the thigh length is very cheeky-chic' worn with coloured opaque tights. I love the Per Una padlock handbag too, a gorgeous colour to carry against black and grey clothing this winter.

Lucinda Hayton has loads more fabulous local gift ideas in her Looking Good column in this week's edition of The Westmorland Gazette.
