Rugby - Kendal edge exciting finish in cup

KENDAL are through to the semi-finals of the Story Cumbria Cup after a 36-29 victory over Workington in front of a big crowd at Ellis Park on Easter Saturday.

Kendal scored two unconverted tries from Reece Tomlinson and James Gough in the first half, with Workington replying with a Kevin Harper penalty and an unconverted try from Neil Hastings just before the break.

After Kendal turned round 10-8 ahead, an Andrew Boardley try wide out was cancelled out by Mike Hawley, which when converted levelled the scores at 15-15.

Ian Voortman touched down for a fourth Kendal try, also converted, but Workington again replied with David Bowe going over - again converted - to level the scores at 29-29 going into a nailbiting last 10 minutes.

Replacement No. 8 Mark Wilson scored the crucial deciding try for Kendal and Boardley converted to give Kendal an exciting, hard-fought passage into the semi-finals, at home against Penrith on April 5 - a repeat of last year's final.

Penrith saw off st Benedict's 47-3 in their quarter-final, with tries from Gavin Young (2), Ryan Fisher, Joe Nattrass, Rob Dawson, Darren richardson (2) and Dave Preston.
