Barrow woman on top of the world

SARA Thurman, a young Engineer at BAE Systems Submarine Solutions in Barrow, is the winner of the first Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Andrew Medd Award for the North West Young Mechanical Engineer of the Year.

The award was presented at Barton Grange Hotel, Preston, in front of 180 Engineers from around the North West including TV science and engineering buff Johnny Ball and Engineering Director of the IMechE, Dr. Colin Brown.

Sara was nominated for the award by BAE Systems, Submarine Solutions where she is currently on an industrial placement at their Barrow site whilst completing her Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Leeds University.

She has progressed within her role and achieved many tasks far beyond the status of an industrial placement, liaising with senior representatives of both BAE Systems and the Ministry of Defence.

The award has been created to recognise the achievements of young engineers who are just starting out in their careers in the region.

Ian Grant, Chairman of the North Western Young Members Panel of the IMechE says "The North West has a strong tradition of Engineering and our young Engineers are continuing to develop this exciting industry within the region."

The award has been named after Andrew Medd, Vice President of the IMechE, in recognition of the work he has done inspiring young engineers and potential engineers in the region.

Andrew said: "Engineering is a very exciting and rewarding career which can also be tremendous fun, and it touches every single aspect of our lives today."

Andrew added: "There are so many committed and enthusiastic young Engineers in the North West, and this award is a fantastic initiative to recognise their achievements."

Johnny Ball, the guest speaker at the event, added to this by stating "What you can do with Engineering can blow your mind, and the young Engineers nominated for this award are all excellent ambassadors for Engineering in the UK".
