Pick of Week - Marathon takes centre stage

HUNDREDS of runners will take part in the major sporting event in the Lake District this weekend - the second running of the Brathay Windermere Marathon on Sunday.

Held in conjunction with the race is the Brathay Open Day at Brathay Hall, with a number of attractions laid on. Entry is £5 per car.

The marathon itself starts at 10.30am from outside the hall and follows an anti-clockwise circuit of the lake, passing through Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside.

Leading up to the race and under way at present is the Ten in Ten' Challenge, in which a group of endurance athletes attempt to run the marathon course ten times on successive days up to and including the main race.

The 3-D Sports Northern League Cricket programme sees Netherfield entertain second-placed St Annes on Saturday, while Kendal travel to play Blackpool (both matches 1pm).

On Sunday, Kendal are at home to Preston in the Cockspur Cup, the national clubs' knockout (1pm), while Netherfield go to Appleby Eden in the Cumbria Meageen Cup (time to be confirmed).

Fell runners try the classic Fairfield Horseshoe, a nine-mile, 3,000ft test on Saturday (1pm from Rydal Hall, Ambleside), while only experienced runners are allowed to tackle the Old Counties tops earlier in the day (from 8am) from the New Dungeon Ghyll in Great Langdale.

The 22nd Kendal Golf club Charity Pro-Am takes place on Sunday with amateurs competing for £2,000 in prizes.

Fancy trying your hand at tennis? Kendal Tennis Club is running supervised sessions for youngsters under 12 years at its courts at Appleby Road, Kendal, each Saturday morning from 10am-11am.

Simply turn up on the day (tennis rackets available if you do not possess one).
