A TEAM of football-mad girls from Windermere tackled some of the best young players in the country during a national five-a-side competition in Manchester.
The teenagers from The Lakes School, at Troutbeck Bridge, fought hard against the top girls' sides in the UK, coming a respectable tenth out of 16 teams in the National Youth Clubs Association competition at the JJB Soccerdome.
Now the youngsters, Sophie Banks, Nicola Gardner, Chelsea Clark, Leigh Turner and Emily Jamieson, have been invited to play in trials games in Leeds to see if they have got what it takes to represent England in the forthcoming Football Youth Games.
Windermere youth project worker Sheryll Bott, who coached the girls, said: "They did absolutely fabulously in Manchester and worked really, really well as a team. They did Windermere proud when you consider the village is a very small place compared to big footballing cities like Liverpool and Manchester, which also had teams in the event."
